Year 5 Basketball

On Wednesday 10th February all of Year 5 took part in a Basketball Festival at Handy Cross Sports Centre. We have been learning how to play basketball with coach Jenner. At the Festival we were put into 6 teams. One team, Downley 3, consisted of Tyler, Thomas P, Aislynn, Katherine, Caoilin, George, Nathan, Josh P and Daniel. Two other schools took part - Tylers Green and Cedar Park. We played 3 rounds with 2 matches in each round. At the end, it was results time and in 3rd place it was Cedar Park1, 2nd place Tylers Green 1 and in first place Downley 3.

We all had to shake hands with coach Jenner.

We all had a brilliant time.

Congratulations to the Year 4 badminton team who have progressed from local winners, to Wycombe winners and finished 5th in the County Finals.

ICT in the Autumn Term

This term in ICT Year 4 have been using a paint package, creating wrapping paper using repeating patterns,

they created an Islamic prayer mat using the symmetry tool,

they used dots to create a Pointillist picture in the style of Seurat,

they used copy and paste and resize to make stained glass windows,

and then they edited a photo of themselves in the style of Andy Warhol.

MacMillan Biggest Coffee Morning

A fantastic £358.19 was raised today by the parents, children and staff.

The Coffee Morning was held and raised £153.40. The children had a cake sale organised by Year 6 and raised £204.79. Our thanks go to all those who contributed to the event.

National Sports Week Monday 29th June – Friday 3rd July 2009

We kicked off Sports Week in style with an opening ceremony in the playground. Each class came up with their own country name, a national flag, and a national dress. The children paraded their flags and banners along to their national anthem.

During the week KS2 pupils got the opportunity to teach their sport to groups of younger children in one-off sports workshops. The children in KS1 enjoyed learning cricket, hockey and tag rugby. We also had inter-year competitions during the week. The Year ones played the Year twos at tunnel rounders. KS2 had the opportunity to meet a real athlete.

The Olympic rower Matt Langridge came to talk to children in assembly and show his silver medal from Bejing. The week ended with a closing ceremony where the children got to watch a slideshow of photographs taken from the week.

Walk to School Week

Moon Walk

Congratulations to Miss Andrews, Mrs Aitken and Mrs Miller who took part in the Moon Walk during the night of Saturday 16th May. They managed to walk around the London Marathon route of 26.2 miles in just under 71/2 hours. They have raised £1640 between them, with £430 coming from parents and staff of the school. This will go towards Breast Cancer Research.

NSPCC FULL STOP Campaign

Many pupils from school took part in a sponsored Maths Challenge organised by the NSPCC. We are pleased to report that a fantastic £1482.79 has been raised for the NSPCC FULL STOP Campaign. We would like to thank everyone who took part or sponsored the pupils.

Red Nose Day

The children raised a fantastic £345 for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day when they came to school wearing something funny. We also sold £205's worth of red noses making a grand total of £550.

We had a great time doing the
sponsored bounce.

In Literacy we have been doing lots
of drama to help us with our writing.

We love doing our paper challenges in
Numeracy where we have to think carefully about how to solve a problem.

In Science we have been learning the

names of plants/flowers, their parts and functions.

We made the most of the snow and went on a winter walk.

We thoroughly enjoyed making snowmen,

Advice from CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) in relation to children’s on-line activity:

Talk to your child about what they are doing online and visit

www.thinkuknow.co.uk. Ask your child to show you around the age-appropriate related sites; 5-7s (Hector’s World) or 8-10 (Cybercafé).

Make sure your children understand they should keep online friends online. If they want to meet someone in the real world, make sure they take you, or another trusted adult, with them.

Encourage your child to only chat to and webcam with people they know in the real world and that they understand why they need to protect personal information.

Know how to report to the CEOP Centre if you are concerned about someone’s online behaviour towards your child. Parents and children can both report at www.ceop.gov.uk or www.thinkuknow.co.uk.

OPEN SPACE, SPORT & RECREATION

Wycombe District Council has appointed PMP to undertake an assessment of open space, sport and recreation across the District. As part of this study they are keen to hear the views of children and young people with regards to openspace in their area.
