Occupational Therapy

What do they do?

Occupational Therapists (OTs) work with children and young people, their families, and health, education and social care colleagues, to help individuals get the most from their lives and achieve their potential. We work with children and young people who have ‘functional difficulties’ or a physical and/or learning disability which impacts upon their daily participation in activities, meaning their ability to learn and develop, socialise and play may be compromised.

A 'functional difficulty' may include but is not limited to:

  • Learning to explore the world
  • Participating in nursery or school
  • Being able to feed independently
  • Being able to dress independently
  • Accessing suitable toileting/bathing facilities
  • Being able to play with toys and games

The Early Years section provides information to support children up to the age of 5 years with functional difficulties relating to their development. This could include feeding, dressing and play.

The primary section provides information to support children of primary school age with functional difficulties relating to both their home and school needs.  This could include handwriting, concentrating in class, or difficulty with self care.
