The Downley School

“Learning, Growing and Succeeding Together”

Year Group Information

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to the Downley School Reception department and a new school year. Here are just a few points regarding the routines for the new term.

P.E. day will be both classes on Tuesday. It is advised that your child’s P.E. kit stays in school unless it needs to be washed. We will send the kits home at the end of each half term to be washed over the holiday.  Mr Mackenzie will be taking both classes for P.E.

Both classes will also be taught Computing by Mr Barclay on Tuesday.

Both classes will do ‘Show and Tell’ every Monday. This is an opportunity for children to bring in or talk about something from home. We ask that this is not a toy but, for example, a photograph, a piece of their own work, an interesting artefact from a visit or something connected to a hobby or interest outside of school. Please ensure that your child does not bring any toys from home into school on any other day.

The children will be able to visit the library every Thursday. Children will be able to bring home a book once a week to be returned the following week. They are not able to take a new book until the previous book has been returned. We need parent volunteers to help with taking children in small groups to the library every Thursday morning. Ideally, we would like one volunteer per class. If you cannot commit to every week, but could do every other week, then we could arrange a job share. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you are interested.

Just a reminder that we aim to use the outdoor classroom as much as possible. Please make sure your child comes to school with a named coat every day and, when needed, named gloves, hats etc... Please make sure your child has a waterproof coat and wellies to be kept in school and please make sure these are labelled clearly.

Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school so that they have access to water throughout the day whenever they feel thirsty. This should be a clear bottle of plain water with a sports type lid. Please ensure that this is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

If your child is having a packed lunch, please ensure that this lunch does not contain any type of nuts or seeds and that any birthday sweets brought into school are also nut free. Sweets are always given to the children to take home, never eaten in school. Please note there is a ban on kiwi fruit in school due to a child with a severe allergic reaction - please ensure your child's lunch or snack does not include this fruit.

If you would like to come and help in the classroom for a morning or afternoon session, please speak to your child’s class teacher. We would ask for just one adult per class per session.

If you have any other queries please don’t hesitate to ask a member of staff.

Finally, we will be holding two information evenings for parents: Help Your Child With Reading and Writing and Help Your Child With Maths and will inform you of the dates for these once arranged. These sessions will provide you with information so you can help your child with their learning as much as possible. We look forward to seeing you!

Yours sincerely
