Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
The Downley School welcomes all pupils regardless of difference for whom we are deemed to be the most appropriate school. We aim to deliver an inclusive curriculum that embraces all levels of learning and challenge. We have developed a policy for the learning environment that follows the Reggio Emelia approach where all classes incorporate where possible, natural products and limited colour to aid concentration and limit over stimulation. We have a 'no plastic approach' where we use natural products and do not fill all spaces with copied and laminated mass produced resources opting instead for simple resources that the children are familiar with and where possible have created. All areas of the school building are fully accessible to wheelchair users as we have a disabled toilet and changing facilities. The upper floor is accessed via a lift and ramps.
The Downley School follows the guidance of the SEND Code of Practice 2014 and Buckinghamshire Guidelines which uses a graduated approach to the identification, assessment and provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Our SEND Co Ordinator is Mrs Day.
Full details about the provision for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities can be found in the Annual SEN Report here:
In September 2018 we began working with Chiltern Wood who now have a class located within the school. Emerald class share all facilities with us and bring a lot to our school. We are aiming to develop this relationship further for all of the children.
Should you need to complain about any aspect of SEND please contact Mrs Day via the school telephone number.
