The Downley School

“Learning, Growing and Succeeding Together”

Year 1 - Africa (Lion King) Project

As a year a group this year, we have enjoyed acting, singing and listening to stories from around the world. So, for our project we thought we would like to plan, prepare and perform ‘The Lion King’. We began by mind mapping what we already knew about musicals and ‘The Lion King’. We then made decisions about what we needed to do to make our performance great!

In the lead up to our performance we learnt about Africa, we made non-fiction books, located the 7 continents around the world, discussed how the equator affects temperature around the world. We also learnt lots of knew skills in Art like sketching, shading and using water colours. We looked at a painting by a famous artist ‘Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ by Henri Rousseau. In I.C.T. we prepared the backdrops for our performance and made our masks for our learning log tasks.

We had a visit from the African drummers and Mr Rojas who used to live in Africa and shared his experiences with us.

On Friday 11th July we performed ‘The Lion King’ to our parents, we were so proud of ourselves and our teachers were really proud of us!
