The Downley School

“Learning, Growing and Succeeding Together”

Year Group Information

Year 2 Start of the Year Information

Dear Parents/Carers,

This note covers topics such as the timetable, classroom organisation, and homework. It is not meant to be totally comprehensive as we hope to make many changes to the curriculum and the learning experiences across the whole school this year. Further details will be provided on this blog or sent out via parent mail as and when they become available.

Adults in Year Two:

Class Teachers: Miss Richardson, Miss Dorrian and Miss Thomson (SKITT)

LSA's in Key Stage one: Mrs Aitken

Timetable and classroom organisation

Start of the day - 08:40

End of the day - 15:05

1)  P.E. will take place on Thursday.

Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and that all items are named.  Children can wear their PE kit to school on their PE days.

2)  Reading books and reading records

Collected on a Friday – returned on a Monday

Please talk with your child regularly about the books they are reading, even if they are a fluent reader. In depth discussion of a text ensures that the higher level meaning is fully grasped - think of the book club model that is so popular with adult readers!

3) Water bottles and pencil cases

Children can bring in a small, named water bottle which will be stored and used inside the classroom. Whilst the school provides all the stationery required, we do realise that the children enjoy bringing in their own resources in pencil cases. We would ask that they keep these to a suitable size in order to show consideration for other children sharing their table space. Every pencil case should be transparent and able to fit into a child’s tray. All the items should be named. Contents for a pencil case could include: HB pencils, glue sticks, coloured pencils, a rubber, whiteboard pens, 30cm ruler and a pencil sharpener.

Homework

Homework will include:

  • Mathletics
  • Spellings
  • Reading
  • TT Rockstars
  • Learning Logs

End of Key Stage 1 Assessment

We appreciate that it is rather early to be thinking about the end of Year 2 when your child is at the beginning of this academic year. However, we feel it is important to make you aware that your child will be formally assessed in reading, maths, as well as spelling, punctuation, and grammar in May 2022. These formal tests will sit alongside our teacher judgements. We plan to run an information session in the autumn term where we will share further details of these assessments.

Due to the missed Phonics Screening in June 2021, because of government changes, they will take place in December 2021.
