Year Group Information for Parents
Year 4 Start of the Year Information
This note covers topics such as the timetable, classroom organisation, and homework. It is not meant to be totally comprehensive as we hope to make many changes to the curriculum and the learning experiences across the whole school this year. Further details will be provided on this blog or sent out via parent mail as and when they become available.

Timetable and classroom organisation - updated September 2021
Start of the day - 08:50

PE/Games will run on a Tuesday & Wednesday 2020/21 with one class doing swimming on Tuesday instead - children are welcome to come in their PE kits for the day.
Swimming for schools has now restarted but we have been given an early slot. Each class will swim for half the year. We ask the class swimming to be at the Year 4 fire exit at 8.30am so we can leave to get on our coach at 8.35am.
1) Transition from Year 3
Independence, increased responsibility and self-motivation is a key focus in Year 4 as we prepare them for UKS2.
As the children are often hungry before lunchtime, you may like to provide a healthy snack at break time of either some fruit, vegetables or a sandwich (no crisps or biscuits please).
2) Reading books and reading records should be brought in on a Wednesday and will be reissued on Thursday. If they are on the reading scheme, we will give up to 2 books a week.
When you read with your child at home, please can you write a brief comment about how they are finding the books and any areas you feel they would benefit from support in.
Please talk with your child regularly about the books they are reading, even if they are a fluent reader. In depth discussion of a text ensures that the higher level meaning is fully grasped - think of the book club model that is so popular with adult readers!

3) Water Bottles and Pencil Cases
Children should bring in a named water bottle which will be kept inside the classroom and sent home at the end of each day. Children should have their own named pencil case in Key Stage Two to encourage further independence and responsibility. We would ask that they keep these to a suitable size so this fits in their tray. It should contain:
HB pencils, a pencil sharpener, a rubber, a 30cm ruler, coloured pencils, whiteboard pens and glue sticks.
4) Personal Organisation
Many children choose to have a rucksack to carry their personal items to school. However, we also ask that children bring in a clear A4 named folder for their tray to help the children remember to take home/ hand in their homework, reading books and letters. This will prevent items being mislaid in the cloakroom or left in their drawers.
5) Assessment - Multiplication Tables Check
From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, all state-funded maintained schools and academies (including free schools) in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to year 4 pupils.
The national curriculum specifies that pupils should be taught to recall the multiplication tables up to and including 12 × 12 by the end of year 4. More details will follow in due course.

Homework will include:
- TT Rockstars (focus on all times tables up to x12)
- Spellings - a weekly spelling pattern is taught and tested the following week
- Reading - this should be recorded in their reading journal
- Learning logs - children will choose the order of the tasks
